Multi-factor authentication (MFA) has been available on bramble for some time, and many users have already enabled it. From 1 September 2026, it will be required on every account.
Why we’re making it mandatory
In the wider world of internet security, accounts are often compromised not because of a hack, but instead through a login using a password which may have been reused, phished, or obtained in a data breach from somewhere else. A password alone is a single point of failure that cannot be seen until it fails.
MFA makes it impossible for a password alone to be the point of failure for an account. Even if someone else knows your password, they will not be able to use it.
What’s in a bramble account is worth the protection: models and meshing, geometry and CAD data, boundary conditions, solver setup, and post-processing. For most users, that means commercially sensitive design work and engineering effort.
What you’ll have to do to secure your account
You’ll need an authenticator app for TOTP – the same process that’s used by banks and cloud providers. If you already have a TOTP authenticator app for another application installed on your device, then you can use that same app for bramble as well. No additional app needed!
If you don’t have one, any generic TOTP app should do. Some popular ones are Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Authy, and the authenticator feature in password managers like 1Password and Bitwarden. All of these are free.
The enrollment process is user-specific and will only take a couple of minutes. It requires no action whatsoever from the part of your organisation or your IT administrator.
Steps to configure MFA
Step 1 – Navigate to the settings
Navigate to bramble as usual, then open the settings toggle in the upper-right corner.
Step 2 – Scan the QR code
In the Login & Security section, scan the QR code with your camera, this will then open up your TOTP app.
Step 3 – Verify
Your TOTP app will display the one-time password consisting of six digits. Enter it into the six boxes provided and click Verify OTP. If the tag changes from ‘not verified’ to ‘verified’, you’re done!
How logging in will change afterwards
Very little. You’ll enter your username and password as usual, then a six-digit code from your authenticator app. Codes rotate every 30 seconds and are generated on your device, so the app works offline and doesn’t need a mobile signal.
Before 1st September
Enrolling now takes a few minutes and avoids doing it on the morning of the 1st. We’d recommend setting it up ahead of the deadline.
